Enigma scout troop have had their first overnight sleepover this weekend and what a weekend we have had!

19 scouts, 2 young leaders and 6 leaders travelled by coach to York on Saturday morning for a day full of fun and festivities, including a visit to York Dungeons, the Christmas Markets and a walking ghost tour of the city.

The scouts loved the Dungeons, learning all the gory and grisly history surrounding York over the last 2000 years, moving through live performances which bring history to life in a truly terrifying way. Whilst there, Shauna was convicted of being a witch and got burnt at the stake, a young leader was treated for the plague and several members of the group were tried, tortured and punished for crimes such as stealing sheep or spying for the French. There were lots of screams and laughter throughout the visit, from scouts and leaders alike!

Lunch and free shopping time followed; the scouts could be found exploring the Yorkshire Yuletide Village, St Nicholas fair, the Shambles Marketplace and the many larger shops contained within the city. Many bought sweets, souvenirs or Christmas presents for their families but all enjoyed the freedom of exploring with their friends. The leader team were incredibly impressed of the way the scouts behaved during the free time, even beating the leaders back to the meeting point and counting to ensure all had arrived safely.

We finished the day off with a ghost tour of the city with Gary the Ghost Keeper where we shared stories of York’s gruesome and bloodcurdling past, visiting narrow alleyways, ancient coffins and local landmarks. The scouts were captivated by the macabre of the tales, asking questions with interest.

On return to Penistone scout hut, a film and treat, hot chocolate, followed tea before bed.

Sunday morning saw the scouts engaged in a variety of activities including a Christmas Quiz, working towards the Local Knowledge badge, festive crafts and toasting marshmallows on fires outdoors. A two course Christmas Lunch with all the trimmings concluded the weekend, leaving everyone feeling festive and looking forward to the Christmas period.
