    Thank you for considering becoming a member of the Group executive.
  • Penistone Scouts Executive Commitee's purpose is, "To develop Penistone Scouting in keeping within it's charitable objectives and in parameters of good governance", and is the Trustee Board of the Charity.

    We meet for a couple of hours in the evening every two months with the occasional ad hoc meeting.

    We are specifically looking for executive members with a background in one or more the following areas;
    • Deputy Treasurer / Charity fiscals (Fact sheet)
    • General roles to cover: (Fact sheet)
      • Strategic planning and strategy
      • Strategic Risk Management
      • Business Commercial Experience
      • Volunteer recruitment

    Below is a list of main tasks and duties:

    Main tasks

    1. To take part in formulating and regularly reviewing the strategic aims of the group, and in providing direction for its ongoing development, in accordance with the by-laws
    2. With other Executive members, to ensure that the policy and practices of the Group are in keeping with its aims and those of the Scout Association
    3. With other Executives members, to ensure that the Group functions within the legal and financial requirements of a charitable organisation and strives to achieve best practice
    4. With other Executives members, to fulfil all other duties as laid out by law and in accordance with the by-laws

    Main duties

    1. Developing and reviewing strategic aims
    • Consider the Group as a whole and its Members
    • Reflect the Scout Association and Group vision, strategy, major policies and values at all times
    • Contribute specific skills, experience and contacts in support of the Group's activities
    2. Ensuring Policies and Practices are in keeping with aims
    • Abide by the principles laid down in the person specification
    • Attend meetings of the Group Executive
    • Reflect the Trustees’ policies and concerns in all interactions with the Movement
    • Assist in the implementation of the Scout Association and Group's strategic goals
    • Monitor and evaluate performance against strategic aims
    3. Ensuring best practice
    • Be an active Member of the Group Executive in exercising its responsibilities and functions
    • Protect the assets and integrity of the charity, with regard to best practice
    • Maintain good relations with Group staff
    • Take part in briefing sessions provided for the benefit of the Trustees
    • Fulfil such other duties and assignments as may be required from time to time by the Group Executive
    • Engage with Members of the Movement at other levels in the Group

    Trustee Person Specification

    As a Trustee you should be able to demonstrate the following (a successful trustee should have):
    • A record of proven and significant achievement in their own field.
    • An understanding and commitment to the values and ethos of The Scout Association
    • Successful experience of operating within a board in a charitable, public sector or commercial organisation
    • Demonstrable experience of building and sustaining relationships with key stakeholders and colleagues to achieve organisational objectives
    • Confident & effective communication skills with a range of audiences & the ability to challenge in a constructive way
    • Enthusiasm, energy and time to commit to this role
    • An understanding of how to motivate and enthuse volunteers
    • A proven track record of sound judgement and effective decision making
    • A history of impartiality, fairness and the ability to respect confidences
    • An understanding of the respective roles of the Chair, Secretary, Treasurer and Trustees
    • A track record of commitment to promoting equality and diversity, and safeguarding children and adults
    • An understanding of the type of work undertaken by the Scout Association and the Group and a wider involvement with the voluntary sector and other networks

    • I have not previously been removed as a trustee by us, the Scottish charity regulator or the High Court due to misconduct or mismanagement
    • I have not been removed from management or control of any body under section 34(5)(e) of the Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) Act 2005 (or earlier legislation)
    • I am not disqualified from being a trustee by an order of the Charity Commission under section 181A of the Charities Act 2011
