We are extremely fortunate to have a team of fantastic volunteers at Penistone Scouts. Without them, we simply would not be able to offer the opportunities and #SkillsForLife that Scouting provides many young people in Penistone.

The young people’s achievements are recognised in the form of their awards scheme. There are the activity badges, the staged badges and ultimately the challenge badges which make up the Chief Scout’s Awards. Bronze for Beavers, Silver for Cubs, Gold for Scouts, Platinum and then Diamond for Explorers followed by the Queen’s Scout Award.

As adults, outside of our adult training schemes, we don’t have a comparable attainment scheme. It’s not why we volunteer. That said, it is important we recognise individual volunteer achievements. So, after at least five years volunteering, adults can be nominated for awards recognising their service. Those being nominated are not aware until the awards are announced.

It’s also worth noting that not all award nominations are made at a local level, i.e. within the group. The highest awards require headquarters sign off and extensive supporting evidence.

St. George’s Day is typically when many awards are presented. Due to the current challenges of COVID-19, these presentations in-person won’t be possible this year. Our UK Scouting Headquarters have released their, “Roll of Honour” and we’re delighted to have several recipents within the group this year.

Chief Scout’s Commendation

The Chief Scout’s Commendation for Good Service is given in respect of not less than 5 years good service, which stands out. It should be regarded as the Chief Scout’s recognition of the very real contribution made to the Association by the individual concerned

Bar to Silver Acorn

The Bar to Silver Acorn is awarded after at least 25 years’ service, which should be specially distinguished and appreciably better than outstanding.

CONGRATULATIONS

These are all fantastic achievements.

We are particularly proud that one of our own has been awarded one of the highest possible tributes for their service.

It’s extremely important to Shauna, Laura and I that we recognise and call out success. We look forward to many more being recognised and awarded for their contributions.

To all our volunteers, a heartfelt thank you – keep being amazing!
