Reminders & key information:

This edition’s reminders:

Beavers

Castors and Boomers are sailing boats this week. Please meet at Oxspring Park car park at our normal session start times. Pick up will also be the normal time, again from Oxspring Park.

Millstones will be meeting at the Scout Hut this Friday, albeit at the normal session times.

Cubs

Alegre – please meet at our normal time at the scout hut.

Bella Vista – it’ll be American Independence Day, so the cubs will be learning about and celebrating the event.

Raptors – cubs will be challenged in “Krypton Factor” style activities. This will really test the sixes teamwork, plus physical and mental capabilities. Please meet at the school at our normal time. Dress appropriately for the weather – necker required, but uniform may not be. Bring a water bottle, please.

Scouts

Enigma  – the time has arrived for our adventurous activities night. If you haven’t paid yet, please bring cash on the evening. Full details for this are in the link.

Wibbles – please look out for an email later in the week.

Viernes – will not be meeting this week due to Scouttastic. Back to normal on the 13th July, when we will be completing the scouts hobbies badgework.

Black Country (Summer camp) – An information evening for our Scout and Explorer summer camp will be held on Monday, 9th July at 19:00. We will be holding this session at the Scout Hut, and replaces the Enigma scout meeting. The session is for parents/guardians as well as those attending the camp – it is essential that everyone going attends this meeting; if this is not possible, please contact Amy to make alternative arrangements. Those that still have monies outstanding, Amy should be in touch with you this week on a person by person basis.

Explorers

Scorpions will be at Laser Tag in Adventure Woods (Tankersley) from 18:15.

Scouttastic

This Friday sees our group at Hesley Wood for Scouttastic. Quite a lot of updates have come out recently, so for clarity:

  • Thursday evening – kit drop off and hand in of all paperwork between 17:30 and 19:00 at the Scout Hut. We need adult support to load up at this time too, please. [Copies of the forms are here]
  • Thursday evening – put up tents at Hesley Wood (from 19:30). Again, we need adult support with this, please.
  • Friday evening – arrive at Scouttastic at 19:00 and follow the one-way system the event organisers will be running. Be ready to, “kiss and go” once you get to the drop off point. We will have leaders there.
  • Sunday afternoon – our dedicated time slot to vacate the site is between 15:45 and 16:00. Do not arrive before this time – this is to mitigate against gridlock and make pick up time smoother.

Over the weekend, you can keep up-to date with what’s going on by following some dedicated event media:

Facebook.com/Scouttastic2018
Twitter.com/Scouttastic
Scouttastic.info

BBC Radio Sheffield will visit the site on Friday, and we are expecting PenistoneFM to be visiting the group on Saturday.

As a group, we will also be pushing out some content, albeit it, collated from our many leaders and posted in batches by Sam and Amy.

Finally, your dedicated contacts for the weekend are Sam and Amy. If you need to get in touch, please do not do so via social media, or by calling up a leader you might have contact details for.

Thurlstone Gala

Raptors and Millstones  will be running a cake stand and tombola at this year’s Thurlstone Gala. We need your prize and cake donations, please. For full details about this, and how to make your donations, please refer to the following post.

With the reminders out of the way, let’s recap the week.

This week:

Cycling badge (Part 2)

Viernes scouts cycled to Dunford Bridge and back as part of their cyclist badgework.

Springvale Community Gardens

Bella Vista Cubs visited Springvale Community Gardens, enjoying getting stuck into the project and learning about what it offers the community.

Tent pitching practice

Enigma scouts pitched some of the tents that will be used for Scouttastic. This helped the leader team out by making sure everything was there ahead of the event, as well as giving practical experience and a teamwork opportunity for the scouts.

Armed Forces Day

Some of our group went to the special Armed Forces Day event in Penistone.

Book reader badge

All three beaver colonies met at Penistone Library this week. They learnt how a library works, made bookmarks and have been set their book reader activity badge.

Street dancing

Raptors got the chance to learn and perform some street dancing this week. Thank you to Lauren Mcauslin dance school (who operates out of Stocksbridge Sports Centre) for making this possible. The Cubs loved busting their moves to a Bruno Mars track. (Video below)

Brunt’s Barn Expedition

Some of Engima scouts have been completing their Expedition Challenge badge travelling to, volunteering in and staying overnight in the Hope Valley. For the full post and pictures, please see here

D of E Bronze practice

Twenty of the Scorpion Explorers have been on their Duke of Edinburgh Bronze practice weekend. For the pics and round up, see here

And finally:

Beaver “Back to Basics”

I’ve been really tied up with work so didn’t get around to assembling the photo compilation post from our recent Beaver camp. You can now see all the photos on our dedicated post, right here.
