“Fab-u-lous”

That’s what I think of our wonderful volunteers; from the regular leaders and adult support to those who come out and make day’s like today happen – a maintenance day where, once again, we were able to achieve so much. Thank you for all of your support.

Group (All sections)

Mother’s Day tea

Our jamboree contingent will be hosting a Mother’s Day afternoon tea on Saturday 30th March. Please see the following page to see the full event details and to begin booking your place.

Music through time concert

Some of our young people will be performing at the Rotary Club organised concert on the 17th March at Wortley Hall Ballroom between 17:00 and 19:30. Monies raised from the event will go towards Silverwood Scout Camp and other local charities. If you can support this, please book tickets via the following page.

Deposits and event payments

Thank you to everyone who has been making timely payments across the group. To limit the impact of last-minute paperwork submissions and monies prior to an event, plus protecting the group’s financial exposure, we’ve adopted a more proactive approach. This includes us asking you to please, after clicking “yes” to an event invitation, to arrange for deposits to be paid by your young person’s next section meeting. Alongside this, we are striving to simplify the collection of monies, with online bank transfers being our preferred method of payment. Steps in this direction will help our leaders spend less of their volunteer time at the bank, which as we’re sure you’re all too familiar, aren’t to be found in the local area. We are exploring the potential of some integrated payment platforms; in the meantime, your section leader should be able to provide details of their section bank account. (Please note: make sure you check the event letter for specific event payments; joint events are often run from specific accounts and they aren’t always the one relating to your child’s section)

Cleaner sought (Paid service)

Our regular, twice weekly, cleaners are stepping back from cleaning. The group is looking to secure a cleaner to tackle the Activity Centre floors, surfaces, toilets and kitchen areas. We can’t employ directly, but the group can pay those who own their own business or work for themselves. If you would like to be considered for the role or can recommend someone who could take this on, please drop an email to [email protected] Thank you.

Back in the here and now, let’s take a look at the coming week:

The week ahead (11th March 2019 onwards)

Beavers

Section meetings

All colonies – Over the next three weeks, the Beavers will be going zorbing! Look out for when it will be your colonies’ turn. This will be at Stocksbridge Leisure Centre on the Wednesday of your week (in place of your normal meeting) 18:00 to 19:30. The cost is £3. Whilst your colony is on a Zorbing week, the other two colonies will be working on an understanding of disabilities to which goes towards their disability awareness badge.

Future Beaver events

Night in the Museum sleepover –  Just a few short weeks to go. Over the weekend we sent out the event briefing pack and medical forms. If you can’t locate your copies, they can be found on the dedicated event page.
Space camp – invites have been launched and Beaver’s opportunity to launch their bookings within your email boxes. For a copy of the letter, have a look here on the dedicated event page.  Deposits need to be paid, please – details within the letter.

Cubs

Section meetings

Bella Vista & Alegre – will be completing their science badges this week. Normal meeting times at the scout hut.

Raptors – please look out for an email relating to this week’s plans.

Future Cub events

Scouts

Section meetings

Enigma – Due to a fault with one of the heaters affecting the temperature of the main hall, Monday scouts will not be meeting this week. Our apologies for this – we’re expecting the part imminently so not to impact on the rest of the week’s meetings.

Wibbles/Viernes – This week we will be developing our map reading and compass skills; we will be using them in the coming programme in a series of challenges.

Future Scout events

Monopoly Run – Thursday evening, in-line with the briefing pack, attendees need to drop their packed kit at the scout hut between 19:00 and 19:45, please. It will be going to London with the advance party and not in the minibus with the young people on Friday. A final reminder regarding consent forms – if you’ve not returned yours (Consent, Medical and Mobile Phone) please arrange to drop through Shauna’s letterbox as per her email.

Explorers

Section meetings

The Explorer’s meeting will be themed around St Patrick’s day.

Future Explorer events

With the reminders out-of-the-way, let’s recap the week.

This week:

Photography

All three Scout troops had a visit from Rob who brought his photography equipment in to look at and also shared his knowledge. The scouts looked at different methods of photography and were particularly wowed with the gimbal. All are looking forward to receiving the forthcoming details (by email) to complete the rest of their badge work and getting started on using their new skills.

Pancakes

Scorpion Explorers all went home a little smokey this week after an evening of fire lighting and cooking pancakes. Some worked better than others but the delicious eggy bread made up for some of the burnt offerings.

Duke of Edinburgh success

Some of the Explorers have been working hard with their Duke of Edinburgh (D of E) awards in the last few weeks and we want to say a massive congratulations to Harriet, Christopher, Ciara, William and Thomas H who have all completed their Bronze Awards. A massive well done!

Baggerwood Woodland Trust

Cubs from all three packs descended upon Baggerwood (near Thurgoland) this week. The young people enjoyed a great evening of animal print spotting.

Builder Beavers

This week beavers took their designs for crazy golf holes and with junk modelling made them a reality. Once built we had a go and sinking a few balls. Much fun had by all, and the builders badge completed.

Maintenance Day

Thanks to our amazing supporters, we managed to get many of the tents out of stores, checked them, performed a few repairs and then put them back safely away for future use. Several other areas were also addressed, including the mounting of a projector screen, cleaning, general maintenance plus an emergency repair to our container roof. We will have another couple later in the year and we hope to secure a similar turnout.

And finally:

District Awards

We received notification from our District team earlier this week of the next District Awards evening. It’s in the diary for the 3rd April from 18:30. If your young person is due an award, you’ll receive an invitation in the post in the coming weeks.
