Towards the start of the year, we shared that unless we can recruit additional adult volunteers, we will be closing three of the ten youth sections at Penistone Scouts’ – impacting 90 young people.

We are quite humbled by how many times our last post has been shared – thank you for this. We really hope to see many of those who will have read it at our urgent meeting on Monday 20th January.

We’d also like to thank those who’ve been in touch regarding how they might be able to help. In some cases volunteers already part of the group offering additional time, and others who would be new volunteers. It’s been a promising response, but not enough to be sustainable. It is essential that we can protect the mental and physical wellbeing of our wonderful volunteers – historically some of our volunteers have supported multiple sections – over a prolonged period, this leads to burn out. Protecting both youth and adult members is my number one priority. Let’s spread the load and divvy up what’s needed.

We have the lecture theatre at Penistone Grammar School booked for 19:30 on Monday 20th January. A number of people have responded to say that they will attend this key event; we’d like to make sure other readers of this post are also able to attend and are therefore reminding our great community of the session.

During the session, we will be talking about volunteering, what’s involved and what you get out of it in return. The different opportunities and profiles of some of our volunteers so that it’s clear all walks of life, and available time can make a great contribution. Once we’ve wrapped up the key messages – we promise not to do death by PowerPoint – there’ll be time to talk to members of the leader team and our executive committee.

We’d love to see you there, whether you are a parent/guardian of an existing member, an adult who is part of the local community and wants to support the development and enrichment of young people irrespective of your own experience of Scouting – remember you don’t have to have been a member previously.

If you can’t make the session, but would like to know more or even to let us know you’d love to help, please get in touch by:
