Reminders & key information:

This edition’s reminders:

Beavers

Castors – will be at the Scout Activity Centre as normal, but it’s starting to look a bit like Christmas so we will be starting our Christmas Crafts.

Boomers – will need to come in coats and warm clothes. Tom, one of the local police officers, will be bringing along the police car and some equipment for the beavers to have a look at. He’ll also be talking to us about his job and role in the community.

Millstones – will be working on their Experiment Badge at the school, normal times apply.

Reminder – All the Beavers are meeting on Wednesday 19th December at Cubley Hall for a joint Christmas Party. As per Laura’s email, the places need to be pre-booked by the end of November. Please email [email protected] to let her know if your child will be attending or not (regardless to which night they meet).

Cubs

Alegre – please look out for an email about your programme this week.

Bella Vista  – please don’t forget to bring in your hobby as we will be showing each other what our favourite pastimes are and earning our Hobby Badges

Raptors  – This coming Thursday the Raptors are in the school and are hoping to make some festive decorations to take home in readiness for the forthcoming annual events. Full uniform but expect that they will return a bit ‘glittery’.

Reminder: Last chance for Bella Vista and Alegre to book on to the Christmas Sleepover. Can all payments be made this week by the following methods, cash or cheques payable to Bella Vista Cubs to your Section Leaders or alternatively email [email protected] for details to bank transfer.

Scouts

Enigma – will be our “Come Dine With Me” Challenge, please don’t forget to bring in the ingredients that you assigned yourselves within your Patrols.  Wonder which group will secure the title of Champions?

Wibbles – we will be taking part in a drumming workshop to find our rhythm and create some tunes of our own. We need an additional adult to support the troop on this evening. If you can assist, please let Alison know.

Viernes – will be visited by South Yorkshire Police; a number of topics will be covered but the main focus of discussion covering drugs. It’s an excellent session, that our Enigma troop experience earlier in the term.

Reminder: Some of the Scouts will be taking part in a bag-pack at ASDA in Barnsley on Saturday 1st December. Parents/Guardians, please look out for the confirmed specifics (slots) for your young person.

Explorers

Explorers will be taking part in our very own mini Olympics.

Everyone

  • Our group’s Christmas Service of thanks will be held at St. John’s Church, Penistone on Monday 3rd December. This is a family event to which all the group’s members and their families are welcome to join us. Please see the event page for full details.
  • There will be an EGM (Extraordinary General Meeting) of Penistone Scouts’ Scout Council on Saturday 5th January 2019 at mid-day. This will be held at the Scout Hut to allow the Scout Council to receive and consider the financial report for 2017-2018 as we were unable to table this at the recent AGM.

Leaders

The next leader meeting will take place at the Scout Hut this Thursday 29th November at 20:00 (once Cubs are done). Neil McKay (County Commissioner) will be in attendance; we’d like as many of the leader team (be they section leaders, assistant leaders, sectional assistants) to please make this session, please.

With the reminders out-of-the-way, let’s recap the week.

This week:

Upcycling for the birds

This week the Beavers made bird feeders for their gardens using repurposed milk bottles. They managed to impress all the leaders by their level of skill, using the scissors to cut sections of the milk bottle out to make holes for the small birds to fit in. We also discussed different types of birds that they may see in their garden and why people feed birds during the winter months.

Pet care

Bella Vista Cubs visited Pets at Home Fox Valley where we learned about how to care for a variety of animals and also got the opportunity to meet some of these.

Come dine with Enigma

Enigma Scouts spent this week learning about food storage and hygiene and planning a weekend camps menu, including a shopping list.  We also spent time devising some entertainment ready for next weeks Come Dine with Me Challenge.

Stay on target…

Viernes Scouts made use of the indoor rifle range at the Scout Hut. Whilst they weren’t shooting, they enjoyed several games of bingo (with prizes) and some games.

Teamwork for-the-win

Wibbles scouts had a change of plan last week and worked on team building activities and games now that the new patrols are in operation. A well-matched game of dodgeball lasted the longest time ever!

Ghana Outlook presentation

Explorers had a visit from Richard of Ghana Outlook who showed the results of years of helping to provide water boreholes in impoverished areas in Ghana. There were also lots of photos of leaders past and present who helped to build a school that is still going well some 20 years later.

Out of this world

Our Raptors this week loved the Young Leader led astronomy badge work.

Millstones go International

Millstones did the International badge.

The Exec get schooled

Members of our Executive Committee took part in some training at the weekend. Our thanks to Richard Wade for coming over to Penistone to deliver this training.
